The Home Office is proposing to move migrants to alternative accommodation including barges, cruise ships, disused military bases and a former prison.
More than 11,000 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year, down about seven per cent compared with the same period last year.
A record 45,755 migrants crossed the Channel last year in small boats, up from 28,526 in 2021 and just 8,466 in 2020. The Home Office has projected as many as 85,000 could come this year.
